Pawco ~ A Pariah Animal Welfare Community

Helping abandoned and abused animals since 2016

WHO WE ARE

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

In the summer of 2016, a group of animal lovers got together. We wanted to do our bit for the commonly seen and ignored Indian mongrels or the Indian pariah dogs.

Hence we decided to collectively work towards the welfare of stray animals (primarily dogs) in the small city of Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Our journey of ABC & vaccination camps, adoptions and on spot treatment has touched the lives of many voiceless strays and gave us the experience to move forward to the next phase of our work with a goal to build a future where humans and animals can coexist in harmony in Allahbad:

The Problem.

What is the problem with the Indian Pariah Dog?

Human-canine conflict.
Dogs drift towards areas of human settlements; looking for food, shelter and safety. As our world is getting more populated and the resources more limited, people are slowly moving towards bigger cities looking for better-paying jobs to support their families back home.

This mass movement of people into a few limited bigger cities has created not only pockets of densely clustered houses and shops, but also garbage (free food for stray animals): the stray animals including stray dogs and cats followed. Our cities are getting more populated leading to an exponential increase in the number of stray dogs.

Dogs are not vile creatures. Few of us humans have pushed them around, denied them space, have often abused them and snatched their basic right to even exist and in a fight between stray animals and humans, the animal will always lose.

Exactly how big of an issue is the stray dog over-population?

It’s in the numbers!

A healthy adult female dog gives birth to = 6 pups (3 male and 3 female)

Number of times a year she gets pregnant = 2/year

Average number of pregnancies of a female dog  = Average Age * 2 = 8*2 = 16

Total pups born via one dog in her lifespan = 16*6 = 96 pups

Considering 50% of these dogs survive the road = 48 dogs (24 females)

Number of dogs born via 24 females = 24*96 = 2304 pups

All these dogs will ultimately be a victim of human-canine conflict.

*The numbers mentioned above are just for estimations, ignoring multiple variables.

OUR APPROACH

How PAWCO got involved?

Pawco was born out of necessity and compassion.

Unlike bigger cities like New Delhi and Mumbai, Allahabad did not have a community which could proactively take care of the ever-increasing population of strays and their suffering. Over a few facebook messages, Pawco was ideated to at least start with vaccination camps of the team’s known stray dogs. In order to tackle the massive problem our society is facing we decided to work via the following channels:
  1.  Animal Birth Control (ABC) Camps
  2. Vaccination Camps
  3. Rescue and Treatment
  4. Stray Adoption drives and pet events
  5. Animal Sensitization programs in schools
  6.  Water Bowl placement drives

— Our Mission

To not only reduce animal suffering on an individual level but, also to systematically reduce the number of stray animals on the road through targeted animal birth control programs and awareness and adoption drives.

— Our Vision

To change the image of the Indian Pariah dog in our community as a friendly companion and not as a wild mongrel, while spaying and neutering enough dogs to control their population on the road.
